Devotional thought

I have never been lost at sea, or even been on the water when a terrible storm suddenly stirred up the waters. But, I have been in situations where the level of danger increased greatly in a flash. In those moments I have observed one thing that tends to be the case every time; I look for the peace that comes with having a fixed or stable thing to look to for guidance!

I remember a time when I was driving my Log Truck down Rt 79 in PA at 70mph, when suddenly I seen a wall of white in front of me. This wall was a snow storm that brought my visibility down to a mere 100yds (maybe). I went from miles of visibility to barely anything in a matter of seconds! I was terrified that there may be a pile up of cars in this white-out, or that as I slowed down to a manageable speed the drivers behind me would smash into my vehicle.

Looking back on it now, the main issue I had was that I did not have a point of reference in that storm! Everything was white. I had nothing to guide me, or to make sure I was even driving in the right lane! When you are responsible for an 80,000+ pound vehicle, the terror you feel in those moments are inexpressible! I needed a fixed point, a guiding line, or a light to guide me, but had nothing like that. I was blind and confused trying to navigate through this storm, and I certainly had no peace!

This storm lasted only about 3, maybe 5, miles. Just as quickly as I drove into it, I drove out! It was so strange, and I never want to experience it again!

That story was to paint a picture explaining the importance of having a fixed reference point, a Lighthouse, in our spiritual lives. Without it we will not have peace! We need to have the Light of the world be our guide in good times and in treacherous storms! Hebrews 12:2 tells us to FIX our eyes upon Jesus.

Storm clouds arise when there is a diagnosis you weren’t expecting, a marital issue that threatens your relationship, an addiction that has a firm hold on your life, a child that is rebellious, and so-on. In those moments it is hard to find peace, but Jesus tells us not to allow our hearts to be troubled. He tells us not to be afraid. Why, because He has given us His peace! A peace that surpasses all understanding. And, it will guide us through every high and stormy gale if we allow it to!

It is so important to keep our eyes fixed upon the Savior of our souls in these times. Maybe you can’t see Him anymore in your situation, my encouragement to you is to quiet yourself enough you to listen for and hear His voice leading you out of your storm!

If I could have had a heavenly perspective during my road crisis, I would have seen that the band of snow was only a small strip in my overall journey, and that I needed not worry but stay steady through it knowing that it would be over soon!

Keeping a heavenly perspective in your current situation will bring you peace, my friend! It will be over soon! God’s got you!

Prayer

God of peace, I praise You for being my Lighthouse. I praise You for giving me peace and guidance through life’s storms. Thank You for never letting go, for being my safe place, and for being patient with me as I learn how to apply faith to all of my situations. Please help me to rely upon You at all times. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
