CHALLENGE: Watch What You Say
James 1:19 – My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
A. CONTROL YOUR WORDS
Vv1-4 – Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.
3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
James 1:26 – Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
B. AVOID STARTING FIRES (vv5-6)
James 3:5-6 – Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
1. Avoid Damaging Words
2. Avoid Angry Words
3. Avoid Lies
4. Avoid Demented Words
Ephesians 5:3-4 – But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
5. Avoid Gossip
Remember, Satan cannot use you as an arrow in his bow to shoot at someone else if you’re not yapping. And no one will hear what you said about someone if you didn’t say it in the first place!
C. FILTER IT
VV7-8 – All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
Proverbs 12:18 – The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
Proverbs 10:19 – When there are many words, sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his lips is prudent.
Vv9-12 – With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
Ephesians 4:29 – Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Genesis 2:15 | Team Married
Pastor Bill McMinn Challenges to Do Life Together with your spouse.
READ: Genesis 2:15 and following
CHALLENGE: Do Life Together
Let’s talk about the beginning of time when there was just one man on the planet – the time when Adam was alone and God said, that’s NOT good! God had created the world and God said that everything was good. It was really good. He made the entire planted birds to bumble bees! And man is in perfection in the Garden of Eden. No pollution. No problems. Yet, there is a problem, he’s alone!
Vv15-18
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;
18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
Verse 18 is a foundational verse on marriage.
A.VALUE THE GOOD THINGS IN YOUR SPOUSE
1.Value Hard Work
2.Value Taking Responsibility
Vv19-23 – Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.
But for Adam[f] no suitable helper was found.
3.Value Spirituality
1 Peter 3:7 – Husbands, and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
4.Value Companionship
Ecclesiastes 9:9 – Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun.
B.SEE MARRIAGE AS A BLESSING FROM GOD
21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribsand then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the ribhe had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said, and flesh of my flesh;she shall be called ‘woman,’for she was taken out of man.”
1.Marriage is God’s Idea
2.There Are No Substitutes for Your Spouse
· Friends Are Not a Substitute for Your Spouse
· Children Are Not a Substitute for Your Spouse
· Sports are not a substitute for your spouse.
· Success is not the substitute.
· Social media is not the substitute.
C.UNDERSTAND DIFFERENCES IN MARRIAGE AS A POSITIVE
1.Differences are Fine
2. Listening is Important
3. Valuing them is Important
Avoid Falling Into Temptation
Before helping others, focus on your own growth and stability. It’s essential to be transformed and on solid ground to avoid falling into temptation while assisting those struggling with sin.
