“Grace like Rain” by Tod Agnew
Devotional thought
Grace Like Rain is a song that builds off of the famous hymn, Amazing Grace. And I love how it explodes into this wonderful expression of praise, “Hallelujah, grace like rain falls down on me! Hallelujah, all my stains are washed away.”
I believe that a hallelujah would be the physical response of everyone who could see what has happened to them in the spiritual because of the grace of God! We are very limited in our ability to comprehend this amazing reality of grace, but I think we should all try to imagine the exchange that happened on the Cross to help us understand it’s profound impact on us!
What Christ did on our behalf
The substitutionary sacrifice of Christ, meaning He took our place on the Cross, meant death for Him and life for us! Punishment, pain, dreadful separation from the Father is what Christ took upon Himself so that we would not have to experience that wrath that He did. Hallelujah!
He was punished for our peace. Jesus was beaten, mocked, spit upon, publicly humiliated, and brutally killed. And, what we must realize to fully comprehend the grace extended to us is that it was supposed to be us receiving all of that! Why, because it was us that sinned against God – not Jesus!
The perfect dying for the imperfect. The innocent being charged as guilty as He mediated between God and mankind. Hallelujah!
Making the connection for ourselves
Does it make sense to you now? Hallelujah, grace like rain falling down on me!! If you were to look upon Jesus on the Cross would it start to resonate more fully in your heart?
Would it take us being falsely accused and actually sentenced to death on a cross; whipped, beaten, mocked, spit on; then Jesus stepping in and shouting for them to take Him instead just as the cold nail touches our hand before we actually understood the amazing grace extended to us?
I am just overwhelmed with praise even now as I think about this to shout out – HALLELUJAH!!
Questions for reflection
- Why do we forget this truth?
- With this truth in your mind, how can you more fully show your appreciation for the grace that rains down from Heaven upon you?
- How long has it been since you shouted a hearty hallelujah for what Jesus did for you?
- Have you accepted this amazing grace personally? If not, why not?
Application
Let’s be people who show our praises for God’s grace by not holding back our praises, by telling others about this amazing grace, and by screaming a hearty Hallelujah whenever we can! Show appreciation for the salvation we have been granted by grace through faith in Christ.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for taking my place, and for washing away my stains by the sacrifice of Your own blood. For that I declare a hearty Hallelujah even now! I pray that You help me, Holy Spirit, to remember this grace applied to my life daily. Help me to stay in a posture of amazement as I reflect upon the Gospel of Jesus Christ that provided this grace to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
