Heart of Worship – Getting Rid of False “gods” in Lives!

Song of the Day

Devotional thought

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

Romans 12:1 (NIV)

The Bible refers to worship in several ways that go so much farther than the reductionistic view of music. Although music plays an important role in worship, it is not necessarily “worship”!

As Paul says here in Romans, our lives lived to the glory and sacrificial service to God is the true and proper worship God requires from His people. We offer our bodies as living, holy, and pleasing to God in response to the mercy He offered us!

In Deuteronomy 11:16 we are told to be sure we do not turn away from serving and worshiping the true God to serve and worship other gods! This is critical to remember as we go through life, but we must be careful not to overlook the potential “gods” in our lives that we make and don’t even realize it.

Making the personal connection

There are many things that are battling for our attention, devotion, allegiance, and worship! The best way to combat these opposing forces that set themselves up as counterfeit “gods” is to remain faithful to worshiping the true God and Savior of our lives.

When we remain close to Him through continual exposure to His Word, prayer, sitting under the consistent and direct teachings of the Bible, and other graces that God has given to us to protect us from wandering too far from Him, then we will be able to recognize and resist the false and disguised “gods” that are vying for our worship.

Bring God more than a song, more than an hour on Sunday! Bring God your heart, your dedication, your service, your life! Give Him everything as you declare to Him that He is your true God and you will serve and worship no other!

Questions for Reflection

  • Have you examined yourself lately to be sure there are no other “gods” in your life that have taken the place of the true God?
  • What are you doing to offer true worship to God? Did your answer only include music?
  • Will you look for ways to rid your life of lesser “gods” for the sake of offering up your full heart and devotion to God?

Prayer

My true and deserving God. I bring You more than a song right now Lord and worship You with all of my heart. I seek to please You by offering an open and transparent heart that seeks to rid itself of any impure ways, idols, and distractions from You. I want You Lord! Help me to have the courage to remove the so-called “gods” from my life that are competing for the attention You alone deserve. I give that attention fully to You now! In Jesus’ name, amen.
