Do We Appreciate the Blessing of Communion? Worship Devotional

Song of the Day

“Do This in Remembrance of Me” by Cheri Keaggy

Devotional thought

Our Church observes Communion on the 1st Sunday of every month. I appreciate the fact that we observe this Sacrament on a regular basis because the Lord told us to do so!

Then He took bread, and after giving thanks He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”

And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.

Luke 22:19–20 (NET 2nd ed.)

We understand the elements of the bread and wine to be symbolic of the Lord’s body and blood, representing the sacrifice of the Lord to save us through His physical body and death. And as we take Communion we are remembering this sacrifice, and really are celebrating the exchange Christ made on our behalf.

The other fantastic thing that happens on Communion Sunday is that we all get the opportunity to examine ourselves in a special way. We normally take a few minutes and quiet ourselves before the Lord to see if there is any sinful way that we need to seek forgiveness for, or any relational division that needs to be restored (as much as it is possible by us).

If during this time of examination we discover that we do have something that is offensive to God or another person in the Church, then we should be taking the time to confess it and to seek out restitution before we eat and drink of the elements. “Do this in remembrance of Me”, Jesus said!

We remember the sacrifice that led us to peace with God and our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ when we examine ourselves and seek to make things right wherever necessary! This is fulfilling the Sacrament of “Communion”, isn’t it? Because Communion represents perfect fellowship between God and man, and the only way we can have that is through the body and blood of the Sacrificial Lamb of God, Jesus Christ!

As we sing in today’s song, “This is My body, broken for you. This is the cup that holds the blood of the New Covenant. This is forgiveness simple and true. This is the way that I have made for you.” May we always observe this wonderful treasure left behind by our Savior – Communion!

Prayer

Father in Heaven, I love You and praise You for the sacrificial Lamb You provided to die in my place. I will remember this gift through Communion Lord, and seek to live in Communion with You and others all the days of my life. Please help me to examine my heart and life on a regular basis and to keep a short sin account with You and others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
